Offering Support & Information

The Massachusetts Women & Family Referral Center (WFRC) offers referral support and information to anyone in Massachusetts with questions about Substance Use Disorder (SUD) treatment and recovery supports for pregnant and parenting people.

The WFRC assists callers with information and referrals for treatment and recovery supports for SUDs, by connecting callers with services and providing interim phone counseling services to those unable to be placed immediately in treatment.

Massachusetts has many programs that provide treatment services such as medication supported treatment, including inpatient and outpatient services for withdrawal management, outpatient counseling, peer recovery supports, short-term stabilization support services, residential treatment services, housing supports, recovery support centers, as well as early intervention and home visiting services for young children.

Who we are

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Bureau of Substance Addiction Services (BSAS) supports the Institute for Health & Recovery (IHR) in providing the Massachusetts Women & Family Referral Center.

More About Us

Pregnant people have priority access to all addiction treatment services in Massachusetts.

All pregnant people who contact the WFRC are warmly welcomed to engage in services. Pregnancy is a time of opportunity. People are assessed over the phone to gain a full understanding of their current needs and preferences and to determine the appropriate level of care needed.

WFRC Call Flow

1. Engagement with WFRC
WFRC callers are warmly welcomed.
2. Assessment, rooted in ASAM criteria
Conversations with callers to develop a full understanding of history, current needs and preferences, and to determine the appropriate level of care needed and any next steps.
3. Referrals and resources shared
Interim Counseling Services
Supporting the development of Plans of Safe Care If indicated,  FRT, FSL and PE Intakes and Referrals.
Shared resources for all levels of care: harm reduction, MAT, recovery support, etc.
4. Ongoing support
Care does not end with a call.
Ongoing communication with providers, callers, resources, etc. to ensure prompt, appropriate and ongoing care is offered to all.

The WFRC is designed to be available as a resource to the pregnant, postpartum and parenting population throughout the state, as well as the people working with them. We welcome calls to us for information, levels of care, Plans of Safe Care, etc.
